Changing life through education- former participant

10 Jan,2016Profiles

A firefighter who joined Working on Fire in 2012 is finally seeing her dream to further her studies come to reality. Jenifer Thomas is a single mother who originally comes from the Easter Cape in Matatiele. She was based at the Wedela base before she decided to leave firefighting to pursue her dream to study further.

‘‘I am now a Bachelor of Education student at the University of Free State (UFS).  I intend to complete my studies in record time and look forward to the higher challenges in the future,’’ said Thomas.

Speaking to Wofire News recently, Thomas said she believed it was only through education that she can change her life and that of others. She, however, emphasized the importance of discipline at tertiary institution as key to success.  ‘‘I have always wished to study at a university, I applied at UFS last year and I was accepted in the faculty of education. I am very grateful  I will be studying.’’

When asked what her message would be to former colleagues in firefighting, she said she wishes other participants who want to study further  to take charge of their lives and pursue their dreams.
