Dr. Guy Preston, Deputy Director General in the Department of Environmental Affairs, also addressed delegates at the WFC on the importance of the land and forestry sector in the global effort to combat the global challenge of climate change.

He was addressing the WFC delegates on behalf of the Minister of Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa. “Our effort is guided by the National Climate Change Response White Paper (NCC RWP), with a vision for an effective long-term response to climate change”, said Dr. Preston.

He also stated that South Africa’s journey towards transitioning to a lower carbon economy and climate resilient society has begun.

He said, “We therefore, recognize the role that our forests in South Africa play in creating a better life for all, and contributing to addressing the global challenges presented by climate change.

“The forestry sector affords us the

opportunity to be more radical, by promoting the role of forests in responding effectively to climate change”, Dr. Preston said.
