Former firefighter goes for gold
31 year old Matshediso Sello, a former fire fighter at the Wedela Team has joined Anglo Ashanti’s Savuka Gold Mine in Carletonville as a Reef Checker.
‘‘I did the course relating to mining at the training Centre in Carletonville years back. I always wished to get a better opportunity,’’ explained Sello.
When asked what her new job entails, she said to check the belt that helps ship soil out of the mine. She thanked Working on Fire for training her especially in the area of safety in the workplace.
‘‘Safety is very important in mines. I am able to articulate and share occupational health and safety tips with my colleagues. When I was working as a firefighter I thought it was futile to have safety talk meetings but now it matters most,’’ she told WoFire News.
She was employed in the programme in 2013.
Matshediso said that she was scared of going underground on her first day on duty. ‘‘But I had to overcome my fears and explore to enjoy my job,’’ she said.
