Free State experiences unusual fires

10 Jan,2016Fire Stories

Free State teams which were on standby in December to assist the Western Cape were kept busy by fires that erupted in the province. The abnormal fire season saw fire fighters battle with fires fueled by massive heat wave and draught since December right through to January.

The Bloemfontein team was one of the six teams that were on standby to assist in the Western Cape attended to big fires which are rare during normal off season.

Jane Khanye, a Crew Leader Type 1 of the team, said since she had been Crew leader, her team had never been that busy off season. One of the big fires they had extinguished was in Gariep Dam. The fire had been going on for two days, however, the Bloemfontein team and Dewetsdorp team successfully suppressed the fire. The teams had fought the fire from the 27th  of December and the fire was successfully suppressed in the early hours of the following day.

Remembering how they conquered the fire Khanye said: “We did back-burns because the fire was too big and when it was on the mountains we waited for it to be on the flat area so that we could attack it and it worked.”

The Free State teams had attended and suppressed a total of 37 fires in December alone. In the previous years there are usually no fires reported at all.
