Kwazulu-Natal Working on Fire HAT refreshes their skills
The KwaZulu-Natal eThekwini and Injisuthi High Altitude Teams (HAT ) recently completed their annual refresher training at the HAT Monk’s Cow Base.
The training consisted of bee and snake awareness, fitness tests – which includes pullups, sit-ups and push-ups – and rope coiling, bagging and harness inspections. Knowing how to inspect equipment before doing any activity is vital in ensuring all technicians are safe in the field.
eThekwini Base Communications Representative (BCR ) Buyisiwe Zikalala says, due to the nature of the work they do, they must be able to face challenges that might arise when working in the field. During the bee awareness they were taught what to do when stung by bees or when encountering a beehive while on duty.
“We also had the chance to handle snakes during our snake awareness class, to familiarise ourselves with them so we can differentiate between a deadly snake and a harmless one and not be afraid of them when we encounter them,” says Zikalala.
