MD Message August 2015

1 Aug,2015MD Message

The national theme for Women’s Month this year is, “Women United in Moving South Africa Forward”.

To this end we are extremely proud of the fact that the WoF Programme is one of government’s most successful EPWP programmes which has created work opportunities for many women across the length and breadth of South Africa. 30% of our Participants are women, which continues to be the highest ratio of women to men employed in this sector.

Many of our women par ticipants have evolved from being fire fighters to becoming administrative and management personnel in the programme. Our women participants are proud of who they have become mainly thanks to the continuous training and development which they are receiving in WoF.

Our South African crews have now all returned home from Canada where they were part of international wildland fire fighting teams, fighting multiple fires in Alberta and British Columbia in Canada during July and August. Our teams have received high praise from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) for their levels of fitness, good work ethic and high morale. When they arrived in Canada we knew already that the South African training standards and qualifications were verified against the Canadian, USA , Mexico, Australian and New Zealand systems and our training was way up there, being compatible with international standards.

On behalf of the entire management of Working on Fire I want to thank our fire fighters for the exemplary manner in which they represented our country in Canada.
