WoF in Mpumalanga participated and delivered a presentation on community fire awareness as part of the International Disaster Reduction Day which was organised by the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality on the 8 October 2015.

The event took place at Mariam Mokgakane Community Hall. Stakeholders such as the SA Weather Service, Traffic Department, Provincial Disaster Management, Eskom and the South African Police Service partnered WoF in delivering presentations on the risks/hazards which are threatening the community. Community Fire Awareness Officer, Mbuso Siwela, in his presentation urged the community to be vigilant as the weather temperatures are very high.

“Properties must not be surrounded by dead plants and fire breaks must be done properly that could save human and livestock lives,” said Siwela.

“Risk assessments must be done around properties to reduce the number of unwanted veldfires,” he concluded
