Mpumalanga, Community Awareness Officer Mbuso Siwela, conducted a fire awareness workshop at the Macadamia Military base in Komatipoort near Nkomazi. The workshop took place in the third week of March.

The Community Fire Awareness Officer was invited to ensure that all the solders in Macadamia base understand veld fires and are ready for the fire season.

Siwela was focusing on topics such as fire behaviour, fire season is coming, fire management and evacuation plans. He advised the soldiers that they must make sure that they do fire breaks around their base and even if they are going to camp outside they must remove fuel around their tents.

“When the base is surrounded by fuel fire can easily engulf the camp that could lead to the loss of human lives”, he said. He concluded that it is important for them know that there are different types of fuels, which includes moisture; fuel content; heavy; light; dead and live fuels.
