25 Jan,2016Working on Fire

Working on Fire Western Cape recently created job and skills development opportunities for 24 previously unemployed youth from Vredenburg -West Coast, housed by base manager Andre de Wits from the Greater Cederberg FPA.

“A total of 100 youngsters have responded to our advertisement for fire fighters and ascended in Vredenburg at the Vredenburg Sports Ground, to try their hand at being a fire fighter. But only 24 passed our stringent fitness tests,” said Shane Christians, Western Cape General Manager.

Recruits were put through rigorous training based on international standards which will equip them to work as veld and forest fire fighters. They had to prove they are able to do a 2.4 km run in less than 12 minutes, 40 push-ups and pull-ups in under 1 minute.

The new recruits have been sent to WoF’s training academy in Nelspruit where they will be equipped with advanced firefighting skills. These fire fighters undergo an extensive 24 day basic WoF fire training course.

This training includes basic and advanced firefighting and the essentials of integrated fire management services. These highly trained fire fighters are all equipped with Personal Protective Clothing and Personal Protective Equipment. The WoF programme has a high regard for safety and our training places are exceptional on the health and safety of our fire fighters.
