The North West Central teams, Provincial Staff, Potch FPA, North West University FPA, Potch Fire Services, ER24 and Police Mounted Academy paraded through the streets of Potchefstroom as they launched the 2016 Fire Awareness Campaign.

The Fire Awareness Campaign launch at Trim Park aimed to raise awareness about fires, educate communities about the cause and prevention of fires to curb damage to property, livestock and unwanted fires during this Winter Fire Season.

The North West General Manager, Noluvuyo Mashologu, thanked the schools for allowing learners to attend this important event.

“Today is the start of the Winter Fire Season so we gathered everyone so we can prepare and safeguard ourselves from fires at home or veld fires.”

The learners were treated to demonstrations and were taught how to shuttle water from the water source using a bucket brigade during a shack fire. These demonstrations are usually done when training volunteers in the informal settlement to help community members protect themselves while they wait for fire authorities.

The demonstrations were provided by the Tlokwe Fire Services under the leadership of Mr Phushack Motaung. A school teacher, Julia Thantsu from Saints Christiana School thanked WOF. “I’m happy with the information we were given and the important lesson on how to protect ourselves from fires”.
