The Christiana Team joined DAFF in launching the LEKWA Teemane FPA that was registered by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) as the legal entity on the 14 January 2015, in terms of the National Veld and Forest Fire Act.

The launch took place on the 12 June 2015 in Christiana Town Hall. WoF fire fighters participated in various activities such as singing, drilling and doing a guard of honour for provincial delegates attending the launch.

According to the Ground Operation Manager, Manase Mpholoane, their participation in the event was to show their support for this initiative and also to highlight the importance of FPAs in the programme.

He said, “I would like to take this opportunity to also raise awareness about fires during this winter fire season and protecting our environment from veld fires”.

Manase encouraged the landowners to support the programme by being alert in prevention and suppression of veld and forest fires.

“The challenge we currently facing are teams that are not utilised to full capacity but we believe through structures like FPA’s it will create channels in which our teams can be used,” said Manase.

The Acting Executive Mayor, Mr. Strike Moyakhe, encouraged the youth to be more interested in education and to be dedicated to anything they set their mind to.

The DAFF spokesperson, Mr Sonwabo Namba, said “The Department as the custodian of the National Veld and Forest Fire Act of 1998 (Act no 101 of 1998) takes a lead in ensuring that FPA’s are registered in high fire risk areas.

This is achieved through the involvement of relevant role players such as Working on Fire, Municipalities, Disaster Management Centres, landowners and relevant departments. Lekwa Teemane is now a registered FPA!
