Preparing land owners for 2016 Fire Season

8 Dec,2015Fire Stories

The Soekmekaar Team in Limpopo believes that the earliest bird catches the fattest worm.

The province officially declared the end of the 2015 fire season in October, but for the Soekmekaar Team this means it is time to prepare for the 2016 Fire season which will start next year May.

The Soekmekaar Team have started identifying areas which are prone to fires in their area. They are working very closely with the land owners.

“It might seem as if we are very early in preparing for the fire season, but with the current climate change one can never be too early. We would rather be early and ready than to be surprised by fires in the coming year”, said Thabang Raphahlelo, Type 1 Crew Leader at Soekmekaar.

The teams are busy with projects of doing the block burns and the control burning in the area. This is regarded as safer for manual load reduction. They will continue doing this until May 2015.

Apart from the block burns, the Sekororo Team has also embarked on fire awareness campaigns inthe communities coupled with door to door campaigns.

“Through our fire awareness campaign we would like to alert the communities to be cautious when using fire during this festive period”, concluded Raphahlelo.
