Raging fires contained by Limpopo participants

29 Oct,2015Fire Stories

Working on Fire successfully fought multiple fires across the Limpopo Province during the weekend of 9-11 October 2015.

Some of the fires were caused by lightning while the causes of the other fires are still unknown. The fires broke out in mountainous terrain and spread fast, making it difficult for fire fighters to access these areas.

A total of 260 WoF participants, air support, fire trucks and bakkie sakkies were deployed to 20 multiple fires in different areas in the Waterberg District.

WoF deployed additional resources from other provinces due to the intensity of these fires and several other fires that were occurring in the province, especially in the Waterberg District. Additional resources that were deployed included four ground teams with fire trucks from Mpumalanga and a ground team with a fire truck from Gauteng.

WoF provided leadership through the Incident Command structure to support the 15 teams and ground and aerial resources in this incident.

The damage included an estimated 200,000 hectare of vegetation, one farmhouse, three houses, three vehicles and two lodges that were destroyed.
