South African firefighting heroes home after successfully helping Canada with their wildfires
Minister Edna Molewa was at OR Tambo International Airport to welcome home the last group which arrived back in the country on the 24th August 2015.
“South African crews have received high praise from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) for their levels of fitness, good work ethic and high morale while they were part of international wildland firefighting teams, fighting multiple fires in Alberta and British Columbia in Canada during July and August”, said Minister Molewa.
“Our upbeat and always happy South African crews, with their song and dance, have been well-received in Canada and have even appeared in the local and national media, including on the Canadian Broadcast Corporation. They have set positive examples to the local and international crews on how to build strong morale and teamwork,” said Minister Molewa.
“We are extremely proud of the exemplary manner in which our participants from the South African government’s WoF programme represented our country with pride and dignity.
The Working on Fire programme excels in changing lives, and we are confident that this trip has had a significant impact on the lives of these young men and women who will now be able to learn from this experience and also impact on their other colleagues and families in the programme”, said Minister Molewa.
WoFire News will produce a Special Edition focussing on our firefighters’ achievements and successes in Canada.
